Diseases
It is of utter importance to take preventative measures against the following diseases.
Rabies:
This is a viral infection which can affect all warm blooded animals, transmitted by infected animals through viral particles in saliva.
For example a dog gets bitten by a fox.
Clinical signs are of a neurological nature starting with behavioural problems and end with severe paralytic signs. Disease is fatal.
There are no treatment options since the disease is also very dangerous to humans. Excellent vaccines can be obtained to protect your
animal from getting infected. Vaccines exist which are approved for a protection of three years for use within the EU.
Outside the EU most countries use a different time setting, mostly yearly boostering.
Heartworm (Dirofilariasis):
Dirofilaria immitis is a worm which resides in the heart and lung arteries. It mostly affects dogs but cats can also be infected
if carrier dogs live the neighbourhood.
The larvae, called microfilaria, are ingested by vector mosquitoes and are passed on to the next host when fed on.
An affected animal shows symptoms like difficult breathing, coughing, lower activity level, weight loss and general
deterioration of the animal. Laboratory tests do detect heartworm quickly and easily.
Treatment is very expensive and risky. Prevention is the best way to keep your animal from becoming ill.
Several preventative products can be obtained from the Pet Travel Clinic.
Leishmania:
Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by a protozoic species. It is transmitted to dogs by sandflies, Phlebotomus spp.
Symptoms of the disease develop approximately one month after infection. Symptoms are not very specific i.e.
chronic wasting, skin lesions, joint swellings etc.
Laboratory tests exist for diagnosing.
Treatments give the patient the appearance of a full recovery, however no true cure exists and relapses are common.
Prevention with certain insecticides is the best way of controlling the disease. Ask Pet travel Clinic for advice.
Babesia:
Is a tick borne disease. After an infected tick has fed on a dog for two to three consecutive days a dog can develop the disease.
After four up to seven days symptoms can become visible.
At first non-specific symptoms like lethargy and anorexia develop. After a few days the animal will show fever and become anaemic.
In the end the animal has jaundice and brown urine.
Medication does exist, however it is always better to use thorough prevention against ticks. And if you spot ticks on your animal,
take them off with special tick removers. Pet Travel Clinic can advise you on certain instruments and antiparasitic treatments.
Ehrlichia:
A disease transmitted by the brown dog tick with an acute aggressive form and a more chronic form when the first stage is clinically overlooked.
First stage shows fever, anorexia, reluctance to walk, depression and weight loss. The later stage shows kidney failure, skin problems,
eye problems and joint disease.
The disease can be treated with special antibiotics. However prevention of ticks is always the best way to keep your pet healthy.

Lyme disease:
This is a bacterial disease transmitted by ticks. It is caused by Borrelia Bugdorferi.
It is also a serious disease in humans. Dogs show the following symptoms: fever, variable lameness, swollen joints,
kidney problems and meningitis causing symptoms from the brain.
The disease can be treated with antibiotics. However one should start treating as early as possible.
The best treatment is still tick bite prevention. And if you spot ticks on your animal, take them off with special tick removers.
